Description:
The Hethitisches Zeichenlexikon (usually abbreviated HZL) is the standard reference sign list for Hittite cuneiform, compiled by Christel Rüster and Erich Neu. It inventories and interprets the cuneiform signs found in the tablets from Boğazköy (Hattusa), the Hittite capital. The volume is Beiheft 2 of the series Studien zu den Boğazköy-Texten, published by Harrassowitz in 1989. It was reviewed in the main Assyriological and linguistic journals, including by Harry Hoffner, and is cited in scholarship on Hittite texts. Two companion volumes in the same series, a German–Sumerographic word list (1991) and a reverse index of the signs (1993), extend it. This is a specialist German-language reference for Hittitologists, Assyriologists, linguists and students of cuneiform.
