Chicago’s Pride is Louise Carroll Wade’s history of Chicago’s Union Stockyards and the communities that grew up around them, from the 1830s to the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Wade, professor emerita of American history at the University of Oregon, argues that Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle gives only one view, and that Chicagoans of the period saw the stockyards and Packingtown as a marvel of the age. She covers the rise of the livestock trade and the meatpacking industry, efforts to control air and water pollution, the growth of the workforce and the status of packinghouse workers, and the changes in the ethnic neighbourhoods. She also covers the part voluntary and religious organisations played in forming the community, and the ethnic influences on politics in this new industrial suburb. The cover shows a period engraving of the stockyards gate and the cattle pens. This copy is in very good condition.

Title: Bones: Structure and Mechanics

Language: English
Pages: 456 (publisher’s figure; library records give xii + 436)
Dimensions: About 25 cm (height)
Publication Date: 2002

Condition: Excellent

Description:
Bones: Structure and Mechanics is John D. Currey’s comprehensive account of what is known about the structure and mechanics of bone, bones and teeth. Currey is Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of York, and the book draws on two decades of research since his earlier work The Mechanical Adaptations of Bones. It shows how the structure of bone and its mechanical properties are bound up with each other. For bone tissue it covers stiffness, strength, viscoelasticity, fatigue and fracture mechanics, and for whole bones it covers topics such as buckling, the hollowness of long bones and impact fracture. Currey writes as a zoologist, treating bone as a solution to the design problems vertebrates faced in evolution, and he uses both human and non-human examples. The book is copiously illustrated and assumes little prior knowledge, so it works as an introduction to the field and as a reference for researchers. This copy is in excellent condition.
