Description:
The Golden Asse of Lucius Apuleius is the second-century Roman novel, also known as the Metamorphoses. It is the only Latin novel to survive complete. It follows Lucius, a curious young man who is turned into an ass by a magic potion, and the tales of love, witchcraft and adventure he hears on the way. This is the Bodley Head edition of 1923, which reprints William Adlington’s Elizabethan translation of 1566 and has an introduction by E. B. Osborn. It is illustrated by Jean de Bosschère in colour and black and white, with eight colour plates, eight black-and-white plates, and chapter headings and tail-pieces in his Art Deco style. The book is bound in brick-red cloth with gilt decoration, a gilt Greek-key border, a roundel of a figure riding a donkey on the front board, and a gilt donkey on the spine. The spine head shows some wear. It is a handsome collector’s edition of a classic, with Art Deco book illustration.
