Description:
This is the third and final volume of R. O. Faulkner’s English translation of the Egyptian Coffin Texts, the funerary spells of the Middle Kingdom. Volume III covers Spells 788 to 1185 and contains the indexes for the whole work. The Coffin Texts fall between the earlier Pyramid Texts and the later Book of the Dead. They were written on coffins to give the deceased the words they would need to reach a secure and important place in the afterlife, and they shed light on Egyptian beliefs and burial practice. Faulkner keeps his notes brief so that the texts can be read as a whole. The indexes cover gods, places, celestial bodies, selected Egyptian words in translation and the parts of boats and sailing gear that figure in some of the spells. This copy is the 1996 paperback reprint, in very good condition.
