Description:
Gifts for Good Children is the first part of a two-part history of children’s china, written by Noël Riley, a specialist writer and lecturer on the decorative arts who has taught at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. This volume covers 1790 to 1890, from the Staffordshire potteries’ first wares made for children onwards. It looks at the mugs, plates and nursery ware printed with moral mottoes, alphabets, animals and scenes of daily life. They were made as presents for children, often with improving messages to teach good behaviour. It is lavishly illustrated and widely cited by museums and collectors. A second volume, by Maureen Batkin, covers 1890 to 1990. This copy is the hardcover with its dust jacket, in good condition. The jacket is worn at the spine head.
