Where Do Our Books Come From? A Story Behind Every Spine

If you’ve ever stepped into Moss Books, you’ll know—this is not just a second-hand bookshop. It’s a place where stories live on, not just inside the pages, but in how those books found their way here in the first place.

For over 30 years, our books have come from people. Real people, with real lives and real stories.
Some walk into the shop gently holding a box, saying, “These belonged to my mum. She loved poetry. I just want someone to read them again.”
Others are moving house and can’t take everything with them. Some are clearing out after loss—books once owned by a father, a husband, or a lifelong partner.

We’ve seen collections arrive that span a lifetime: entire libraries built over decades, books filled with handwritten notes, underlined passages, postcards tucked inside as makeshift bookmarks. A few pages may be worn, but the heart in them? Still strong.

Sometimes, people don’t want to give them to charity shops—because they fear they might be tossed away. They come here because they want the books to matter again. To be read. To be loved. To start a new chapter with someone else.

And not all of our books come to us. Sometimes we go to them. Chris, the owner of Moss Books, has travelled far and wide in search of books—from estate sales in the UK to tucked-away shops in Japan, bringing back rare finds and one-of-a-kind editions.

Our collection has been built book by book, moment by moment. That’s why walking through the shop (or scrolling online!) feels more like browsing memories than just browsing stock.

And here’s the thing—we rarely have two copies of the same book.
That’s what makes it magical.
Each book is unique, like the person who once owned it—and like you, the person who finds it next.

When it’s gone, it’s gone.
If a book calls out to you, don’t wait.
It might not come around again. Some are out of print. Some are centuries old. Some are just… impossible to replace.

That’s the beauty of it all.
Moss Books is a place where books get a second life—and where readers find books they didn’t even know they were looking for.

So next time you visit, remember:
You’re not just buying a book.
You’re becoming part of its story. 📖💛
